The Avian Influenza Prevention Zone housing restrictions for chickens have been lifted today, which means my chickens are now free to roam after a long quarantine. Avian Influenza (AI) has affected wild birds and poultry globally, and quarantine measures were taken throughout the UK to contain and prevent further spread and protect humans from potential contamination. Therefore, without preventative measures the impact of AI can be devastating for the farming community, international trade, and the health of wild and domestic birds.

Our birds were safely quarantined away from wild birds to limit the risk of them catching AI, but today we were able to let them roam free once again!

Let me introduce you to my chickens! We have 11 chickens including one cockerel called Duke. Our original chickens are sky and star who are light brown, and Henrietta who is dark brown. We then adopted Diana, Belle, Elsa, Anna, Mulan, Duchess, and Hei Hei. We named them all after princesses, except Hei Hei who resembled the chicken side-kick from Moana who likes to eat stones and acts a little crazy! Duchess is our silkie chicken and acts very regal. Mulan is definitely the prettiest, with black feathers that have a green tint that almost looks like armour, hence the name Mulan.

Talking about freedom- Obi (our newest edition) had his first walk on the beach! Named after the one and only Obi-Wan Kenobi, who he resembles in spirit. We ended the day with a doggie ice cream and he seems to have enjoyed his first visit to the beach and meeting the animals.

It's nice to have our little chicken entourage back !

Rest in peace Gloria, who sadly passed away before quarantine ended. Gloria was one of our original chickens and the eldest.
