I spent the day exploring the boat Nazca with ocean advocate Wayne Peters, who runs the North Devon Marine Project. The sailboat is powered by solar and sails diesel free using only renewable energy. It was a great experience to learn more about the boat and understand its significance in the boating community, as the neighbouring boat owner recognised it immediately. Although I know little about sailing, I got to explore the boat and understand the role clean energy plays in the 'leave no trace policy' that Nazca and the North Devon Marine Project promote.
The day was spent getting Nazca ready for the 12-hour sail the following day, which involved cleaning and organising the boat. The video above shows some before and after shots of our progress getting the boat ready. The pressure washer used to clean the deck was powered through renewable energy, and some of the ropes were made from recycled plastic. This emphasises the important role Nazca plays in representing a greener way of living, and the significant impact a 'leave no trace policy' can have on repairing the marine environment from damaging boating activity.
The amazing footage above was taken by Wayne on his 12-hour sail from Padstow.
